Who

As a result of contacts in the mid-1980’s between the parish of Our Lady Visitation in Velp (The Netherlands) and the parish of St. Anthony of Padova in Bawku (Ghana), a basis has been set up to provide development aid to the parish in Ghana. The practical details are arranged by two committees located in the two countries, viz. the MOV working group/Bawku/Velp committee and the Velp-Bawku committee respectively.
These collaborative efforts have led to the construction of , among other things, a kindergarten, a secondary school (St. Anthony’s jr. secondary school), a toilet building, a small clinic, etc.

Mutual visits have taken place, as a result of which a close relationship has developed between the two parishes.

On occasion of one of the visits by representatives of the Dutch parish in 2003, a request was submitted by the young people from Bawku to help them to eliminate the growing leeway in the field of Information & Computer Technology. In 2006 this request was repeated as a matter of some urgency when a group of teachers and former teachers as well as some pupils from both the Titus and Pius X Colleges in Velp and Almelo resp. paid a visit to Bawku.

Together with Richard Yeboah, MSc. Eng. (Yeboart Consultancy) plans have been made to develop an internet community centre in Bawku.
The comprehensive schools Pius X College and St. Canisius in Almelo have expressed their willingness to provide support for these initiatives.
To facilitate the successful and efficient realization of these plans, a ‘Bawku’ foundation has been established in the Netherlands and a similar one has been established in Bawku, namely ‘the St. Anthony Foundation’.
